Helping International Schools
Live Their Values

Sustainable pastoral, wellbeing, and safeguarding systems—

Strengthening relationships, empowering staff, and building cultures where everyone feels valued, supported, and belongs.

International schools are extraordinary places.

  • Remarkable Diversity
  • Constant Transition
  • High Expectations
  • Complex Safeguarding Responsibilities
  • Deep Care for Young People

Often, a home away from home.

Most schools know the kind of community they want to be.

The challenge is not defining values.

It is making sure that systems, practices, and people are aligned so those values become
lived experiences — for every young person, every day.

That is where I come in.

I help schools see what is difficult to see from the inside, clarify where they want to go, and build a bridge between the two.

Not just aligned on paper.

Congruent in practice.

Values Are Only Meaningful When They Are Experienced

A school's values are not measured by what appears on its website or in its strategic plan.
They are measured by what people experience every day.

  • What a child experiences on a Tuesday morning.
  • What a parent experiences during a difficult conversation.
  • What a teacher experiences when they ask for support.
  • What a counsellor experiences while navigating a complex case.
  • What a leader experiences when making a difficult decision.
  • What a staff member experiences as they go home at the end of the day.

These are the moments where values become real.

My work is about helping schools make those everyday experiences
reflect the values they hold.

Why Me

Schools need someone who understands the realities of school life from the inside.

My career spans over thirty years across international schools, education, child welfare, mental health, safeguarding, and leadership in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia. I have worked as a counsellor, Head of Counselling, safeguarding lead, crisis responder, and trusted partner to leadership teams navigating complex, high-stakes situations.

I have always believed that educational practice and leadership are strongest when informed by a deep understanding of psychology, relationships, development, and social context.

I deliberately brought these perspectives together through my education and professional training. I hold a Master of Education with QTS, a Master of Social Work with psychotherapeutic licensure, and an Illinois Type 75 School Principal Endorsement — a school leadership qualification comparable to the UK NPQH.

I understand schools not simply as places of learning, but as psychological, relational, and organisational communities—where the way adults think, communicate, make decisions, and build systems profoundly shapes the experience of young people.

A woman with brown wavy hair smiling, wearing a white button-up shirt and blue jeans, standing in a warmly decorated living room with modern art and a large window.

Because creating healthier schools requires us to understand both how schools function
and how people thrive.
And that is the work I have spent my career bringing together.

From Intention to Lived Practice:

Understand

Before recommending solutions, I listen. I learn your culture, understand your values, and spend time with the people and systems that shape everyday school life.

We look beneath the surface — identifying what is working, what is getting in the way, where the gap lies between what your systems are designed to achieve and what people actually experience, and where the greatest opportunities for change lie.

Because before we can change what happens next, we need to understand what is happening now.

Build

I work with you to design practical, evidence-informed systems that are aligned with your values, responsive to your community, and unmistakably yours.

Not generic best practice.

Not a one-size-fits-all model.

Systems that fit your people, your culture, and your school.

Because sustainable change is not imported. It is built from within.

Train

Sustainable change depends on people, not systems alone.

I equip leaders, teachers, counsellors, pastoral teams, and safeguarding professionals with the confidence, understanding, and practical skills to turn shared values into everyday practice.

Because systems only work when people understand them, believe in them, and know how to use them.

Embed

Real change happens through consistency.

I support implementation, reflection, refinement, and problem-solving as new ways of working take hold.

The goal is not simply to introduce something new.

It is to help it become how your school works.

Sustain

My goal is never to create dependence. It is to build capacity.

To leave your school with confident people, effective systems, and the ability to continue learning, adapting, and improving long after my involvement ends.

Because the strongest measure of my work is what continues after I leave.

Where Values Become Practice

Strategic Leadership Partnership

Sometimes leadership teams need an experienced professional beside them for a defined period of time — to bring expertise you do not currently have, support a complex piece of work, or provide thoughtful partnership alongside your team.

Whether you are strengthening wellbeing systems, responding to crisis, redesigning pastoral care, reviewing safeguarding practice, or thinking strategically about school culture, I provide calm, practical partnership grounded in nearly three decades of experience across education, mental health, safeguarding, and international schools.

Whether your school has tutors, advisors, mentors, or homeroom teachers, I help develop relational pastoral systems where every young person feels genuinely known.

Together we can:

  • Strengthen pastoral structures that prioritise relationships
  • Clarify roles, expectations, and pathways of support
  • Develop mentoring approaches and programmes
  • Create practical resources that staff will actually use

Because young people are far more likely to seek help, accept guidance, and flourish when they feel genuinely seen and known.

What we teach matters. How young people experience us matters more.

I provide practical professional learning that helps adults understand young people more deeply and develop the confidence and skills to create genuine connection.

This can include:

  • Adolescent development
  • Trauma-informed practice
  • Anxiety and emotional regulation
  • Behaviour as communication
  • Restorative approaches
  • Difficult conversations
  • Psychological safety
  • Relationship-centred practice

The aim is simple:

More confident adults. Stronger relationships. Better outcomes for young people.

A strong counselling service is one the whole school understands and knows how to work with.

  • Students need clarity about confidentiality.
  • Parents need confidence in safeguarding processes.
  • Staff need to know when and how to refer.
  • Counsellors need policies and systems that reflect professional ethics, local legislation, and the realities of school life.

I help schools strengthen counselling provision so it is well understood, fully integrated into the wider pastoral system, and trusted.

Outstanding safeguarding that truly protects young people is not created by writing better policies.

It is created by building confident people and effective systems.

Together we can strengthen:

  • Safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Staff training
  • Disclosure and response practice
  • Decision-making and case management
  • Leadership confidence
  • Crisis response

Whether responding to a safeguarding incident, supporting a grieving community, managing a complex student concern, or helping leadership think through difficult decisions, I provide calm, experienced support when it matters most.

Because the strongest safeguarding is not something added to school life. It is woven through it.

High-quality relationships and sexual health education is one of the most powerful safeguarding opportunities available to schools.

Done well, it is not simply about delivering information. It helps young people understand themselves, navigate relationships, recognise healthy and unhealthy dynamics, understand boundaries and consent, and develop the knowledge and confidence to keep themselves and others safe.

It also requires adults who feel equipped to have these conversations thoughtfully, confidently, and without shame.

I support schools to build programmes that are developmentally appropriate, evidence-informed, culturally responsive, and genuinely connected to the wider pastoral and safeguarding systems.

This can include:

  • Strengthening curriculum scope, sequence, and developmental progression
  • Aligning provision with safeguarding and student wellbeing priorities
  • Training teachers to deliver sensitive content confidently and appropriately
  • Supporting staff to navigate questions, disclosures, and difficult conversations
  • Engaging parents so they understand what young people are learning and why
  • Ensuring provision reflects both the realities of young people’s lives and the cultural context of the school community

It is education that helps young people build the knowledge, skills, relationships, and confidence they need to understand themselves, recognise risk, protect themselves and others, and navigate the world safely and well.

Strong schools recognise parents as essential partners in supporting young people—and invest in developing their understanding and capacity.

When schools, parents, and young people understand one another and work towards the same goals, support becomes more consistent, connected, and effective.

I help schools create meaningful, sustainable ways of working with parents—building programmes, communication, and support that are warm, practical, and grounded in an understanding of child development, societal change, and the particular complexities of international family life.

This can include parent education, workshops, resources, and approaches that strengthen connection and empower parents to navigate the challenges of raising young people with greater confidence, understanding, and — often — a little less guilt.

Because strong partnerships between school, home, and young people are built on trust, empathy, and shared responsibility.

Staff wellbeing begins with the question:

What does it feel like to be a human being working in this organisation?

It is about dignity.

Trust.

Respect.

Voice.

  • Whether people feel supported to do their best work.
  • Whether their time is valued.
  • Whether their expertise is recognised.
  • Whether they are listened to.
  • Whether expectations are clear and reasonable.
  • Whether leadership builds trust and psychological safety.

Wellbeing cannot be reduced to a termly yoga session, a wellbeing workshop, or an occasional staff social.

Those things may be welcome, but they cannot compensate for systems, relationships, or leadership practices that leave people feeling unheard, undervalued, or depleted.

I work with leadership teams to examine the structures, expectations, relationships, communication, and everyday practices that shape staff experience.

Because staff wellbeing is not separate from school culture.
It is one of the ways culture is experienced.

What Does It Look Like When Values Become Real?

It looks like a student who feels seen and knows who they can turn to.
A parent who feels heard, even when the conversation is difficult.
A teacher who feels equipped and supported.
A counsellor whose role is understood and respected across the school.
A staff member who experiences the same care and respect the school hopes to offer its students.
A leader who can make difficult decisions with clarity, confidence, and perspective.

That is what sustainable change looks like.

Not another initiative.
Not another policy.

A school that breathes its values.

  • “Beth has the skills and ability to see strategic opportunities and where, from a leadership perspective, we can be better at supporting our students. She has developed and introduced pastoral processes and systems, developed our work with parents, and been instrumental in leading and developing our social and emotional learning programmes. She has a strategic vision and understanding that, in my experience, we wouldn't usually find in counsellors, even if they were really good in their own field. I would employ Beth again at the drop of a hat.”

    — Nicola Nelson, Head of Primary, Garden International School, Kuala Lumpur

  • “Beth’s influence and leadership were instrumental in many endeavours in our district. The most obvious thing about Beth is that she is a very quick study. With little explanation and guidance, I could ask Beth to undertake a project, and she would figure out what to do, research the topic thoroughly, and produce an outstanding product on time. She developed a Safe Schools program that helped students learn to create a physically and emotionally safe environment for themselves and others. [Beth] drew on all her strengths and experiences not only to address the needs of our students but also to support the staff as they worked to improve their efforts. As principal, I knew I could count on her dedication to developing meaningful programs and versatile abilities to move our school forward.”

    — Mary Ann Manley, former Principal, Winnetka Public Schools, Winnetka

  • “Beth loves the questioning process... She thrives on the challenge of figuring things out and is willing to listen, re-contemplate and group problem-solve. [She is known for] her remarkable ability to put things into perspective. Beth played a major leadership role in the renovations and reopening of The Skokie School. She constantly questioned what the most developmentally appropriate, cost-effective option would be that would create the most positive, safe and exciting educational opportunity for our children. Beth’s voice lent depth and reason to decisions... [She] provided tools and created school-wide activities to promote a community where all felt valued and safe to learn and grow. Beth clearly models the type of human connections we strive to instil within our students... Beth is also the one who takes action and gets ‘it’ done. Beth is simply a good person with a huge heart. She has great integrity, is fun and unbelievably creative. She can easily laugh at herself and openly engages in self-evaluation as a means of constant improvement.”

    — Amy L. Becker, former teacher, Winnetka Public Schools, Winnetka

  • “One of the best presentations ever.” ● “Truly inspiring and thought-provoking.” ● “Dynamic, informative and heartfelt.” ● “A fantastic, insightful presentation and wonderfully presented.” ● “It was so helpful... so much to learn.” ● “My son said she spoke to them all and really connected with the Y10s.” ● “Please can we have more sessions!”
